Travel Restrictions In and Out of Australia

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Government has imposed strict border measures to protect the health of the Australian community. This limits entry into and departure from Australia.

Entering in Australia

At the moment, all visitors are banned from entering into Australia. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents are allowed to enter Australia. Otherwise, you must have received an exemption.

What exemptions are there for travelling?

  • Non-citizens travelling at the invitation of the Australian Government for the purpose of assisting in the COVID-19 response

  • Providing critical or specialist medical services

  • A non-citizen with critical skills or working in a critical sector in Australia

  • A non-citizen sponsored to work in Australia with an occupation on the PMSOL

  • In the national interest, supported by Australian Government or State/Territory government authority

  • Military personnel

OR

  • Compassionate and compelling reasons

All travellers arriving in Australia will be required to quarantine at designated facilities for 14 days.

Leaving Australia

Australian citizens or permanent residents cannot leave Australia unless an exemption is received.

How can you get an exemption?

  • Essential for the conduct of critical industries and business

  • Need to receive urgent medical treatment that is not available in Australia

  • Urgent and unavoidable personal business

  • Compassionate or humanitarian grounds

  • Or otherwise in the national interest

For any travel exemption requests, we advise that you apply as early as possible, preferably at least two weeks in advance.

On 28 September 2020, we received the best news from AHC lawyers who have informed me that my partner’s visitor visa application and travel restriction exemption request have been approved by the Department of Home Affairs.
