Skills in Demand (SID) Visa: The New TSS Subclass 482 Visa
What is a Skills in Demand (SID) Visa?
The Skills in Demand (SID) visa, introduced by the Migration Amendment (2024 Measures No. 1) Regulations 2024, replaces the previous Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482). This new temporary visa aims to streamline processes for skilled migrants and enhance Australia’s ability to fill gaps in the labour market.
What are the main streams of the SID visa?
The SID visa comprises three distinct streams:
Core Skills Stream
This stream is for those whose occupations are listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) and who meet the core skills income threshold of $73,150. However, some occupations available under the former TSS visa may not qualify for the Core Skills Stream.
Specialist Skills Stream
This stream targets applicants in any ANZSCO occupation who meet a specialist skills income threshold of $135,000 or more. The focus is on highly skilled migrants who can contribute significantly to Australia’s economy.
Labour Agreement Stream
This stream retains existing settings from the TSS visa while further developments are made regarding the proposed Essential Skills stream.
How does the SID visa Differ From the Previous TSS Subclass 482 Visa?
The SID visa introduces a new Specialist Skills stream that was unavailable under the TSS visa. It also reduces the minimum relevant work experience requirement from 2 years to 1 year for all streams, making it easier for applicants to qualify. Furthermore, references to the Short-term and Medium-term streams have been replaced with the Specialist Skills and Core Skills streams.
What are the application charges for the SID visa?
The Visa Application Charges (VAC) for the SID visa are as follows:
Primary application charge: AUD 3,115
Additional charge for applicants aged 18 or older: AUD 3,115
Additional charge for applicants under 18: AUD 780
These fees align with the previous Medium-term stream charges under the TSS visa.
