Medical Treatment Visa (MTV) (subclass 602) is a temporary visa that allows individuals to enter or stay in Australia for the purpose of undergoing medical treatment. This visa can also be granted to those who are supporting someone undergoing treatment, donating an organ, or receiving an organ.
What Can the Medical Treatment Visa (Subclass 602) (MTV) Provide?
Duration: The visa is granted based on the expected duration of the medical treatment. In most cases, it will not be granted for more than one year.
Eligibility: The visa is suitable for individuals requiring medical treatment and those accompanying them.
What are the Common Conditions of MTV (Subclass 602)?
Age: There are no age restrictions for applicants.
Health Requirement: Your medical condition must not threaten public health in Australia.
Character Requirement: Applicants must meet the Department's character requirements.
No Previous Visa Issues: You must not have had a previous visa cancelled while in Australia.
Financial Requirements: You must provide proof of adequate means to support yourself and any accompanying individuals. This includes covering:
Travel expenses to and leave Australia
Medical treatment costs for hospitals and related bodies
Other expenses related to your stay and daily costs
Expenses to cover the costs for accompanying individuals, such as organ donors or support persons (This must be pre-arranged before you arrive in Australia).
Are there Any Work Restrictions with a Medical Treatment Visa?
Work is not permitted on this visa. However, you may study in a permitted course for up to three months. You may apply for work rights in specific circumstances, e.g. facing financial hardship.
Can I still apply for an MTV (SC 602) if I’m in Australia and Do Not Hold a Valid Visa?
If you are in Australia without a valid substantive visa, your application must include Form 1507 – Evidence of Intended Medical Treatment to make it valid.
What Happens After My Subclass 602 Visa Application is Lodged?
Once your application is submitted, the Department will assess it and contact you for any additional information required. You will be notified whether your visa has been granted or refused.
How long is the Processing Time for an MTV (Subclass 602)?
As of today, 90% of MTV visa applications are being processed at around 84 days timeframe.
