Bring Your Parents to Australia and Become a Permanent Resident
I am writing to explore the different options available to bring your parents from oversea countries to Australia and obtain permanent residency. Different visa options may be better suited for different persons with different purposes. The scope of this article will focus on 3 pathways to permanent residency, an application for a Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa , an application for a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa followed by a Contributory Parent (subclass 143), and an application for Aged Parent (subclass 804) visa.
Pathway 1: Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa
The application cost for this visa is $47,825 Australian dollars for one parent. This sum to be paid in two instalments:
During lodgement, the visa applicant will be required to pay $4,225 (an additional $1,425 is payable should a secondary applicant be included in the visa application).
The second instalment is to be paid and only paid if the visa is granted by the Department, it will cost $43,600 for the main applicant (an additional $43,600 for a secondary applicant). Should the Department refuse the applicant’s application, no further costs are payable.
The queue times are estimated to last for 64 months (5.3 years) as of March 2022.
Pathway 2: Contributory Parent (temporary) (subclass 173) visa
This pathway involves 2 steps. The visa applicant will apply for a Contributory Parent (temporary) (subclass 173) visa and subsequently apply for a Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa in 2 years. This visa option is generally for applicants who wants to apply for the Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa but do not have sufficient funds at the moment in time.
The queue times are estimated to last for 64 months (5.3 years) as of March 2022.
The costs associated with this pathway totals to $51,770 for 1 parent. The following is a breakdown of the costs:
During lodgement of the Contributory Parent (temporary) (subclass 173) visa, the visa applicant will be required to pay $2,850 (an additional $1,425 is payable should a secondary applicant be included in the visa application).
Upon the grant of the visa, a main applicant will be charged $29,130 (an additional $29,130 is payable for a secondary applicant).
Two years from grant, the applicant will apply for a Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa. The costs payable on upon lodgement is $370 for the main applicant (an additional $190 for a secondary applicant).
Upon the grant of the visa, the application will be charged $19,420 (an additional $19,420 is payable for a secondary applicant).
Eligibility to Contributory parent visa applications
The requirements stipulated for a Contributory Parent visa application are as follow:
Have a sponsor
The child (Sponsor) must be a settled Australian citizen or permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, who is 18 years of age
If the Sponsor has not turned 18, the applicant may be sponsored by his spouse, provided she meets the aforementioned requirements.
Meet the balance-of-family test
Half of your children and step-children must be a settled Australian citizen or permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
Have assurance of support
Provide evidence that you will not have to rely on government assistance after you entered Australia
Meet the health requirement

Have health insurance

Pathway 3: Aged Parent (subclass 804) visa
This visa is available for parents who are already on a temporary visa and qualify for an aged pension. Upon lodgement, the visa applicant will be granted a bridging visa which will allow the applicant to remain lawful in Australia for the duration of processing of the visa. The actual processing time will be subjected to the demands of this visa type but it is estimated that that each application will be in queue for 30 years before final processing.
The application costs for this visa is $6,490.
