New Ministerial Direction Issued to Strengthened Character Test to Protect Australian Community
Alex Hawke, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, has announced that a new Ministerial Direction has been published to provide guidance for character test application for certain revocation of mandatory visa cancellations, as well as certain visa cancellation and visa refusal decisions.
The new Direction emphasizes how family violence committed by visa applicants will not be tolerated. Other forms of unacceptable behaviour towards vulnerable people such as the elderly, forced marriage, and worker exploitation are also required to be considered.
The character test is crucial to the integrity of the Australian Immigration Program as non-citizens who do not pass the test may have their visa cancelled or refused.
