Skills In Demand (SID) Visa Subclass 482: Work Experience Requirement

The Australian Government has announced significant reforms to the migration system, particularly concerning the Subclass 482 Skills In Demand (SID) visa. Applicants will only need to demonstrate 1 year of relevant work experience instead of the previous requirement of 2 years. This change is effective from 7 December 2024 onwards. This change aims to streamline the visa application process for skilled workers.

What are the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa’s Work Experience Requirements?

Under the new regulations, applicants for the SID Subclass 482 visa must fulfil the following conditions:

  • 1 Year of Work Experience: Applicants must show only 1 year of work experience in their nominated occupation or a related field.

  • Qualifications: If an applicant does not hold the required qualification, they must provide additional work experience in lieu of that qualification.

Determining suitability and the amount of work experience required will depend on various factors, including the specific qualification, the occupation's skill level, and the recency of the work experience.

What are the Work Experience Requirements for the new Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482)?

To qualify for a SID (SC 482) visa, applicants must meet specific visa grant criteria for their skills in the nominated occupation. These criteria include common criteria applicable to all primary applicants and additional criteria based on the specific visa stream (e.g., Specialist Skills, Core Skills, or Skills in Demand Labour Agreement stream).

What are the Assessments of the Requirements?

Latest Changes to Occupational Classification List

It is important to note that a new classification system, the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), replaced ANZSCO on 6 December 2024. While ANZSCO remains in effect until that date, it specifies that certain occupations require specific qualifications, and relevant experience or licensing may also be mandated.

Do I need to apply for a Skills Assessment for Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) Visa?

A skills assessment may be required for certain occupations to confirm that applicants possess the necessary skills, qualifications, and experience to perform their nominated role. Some popular occupations are listed below that may require other skills evidence:

  • Accountants
ANZSCO specifies that most roles require a bachelor’s degree or higher, with additional relevant experience or training often needed. Registration or licensing may also be mandatory.

  • Hairdressers
This occupation typically requires an AQF Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training or an AQF Certificate IV. However, three years of relevant experience can sometimes be substituted for formal qualifications.
