A Guide to Carer Visa (Subclass 116 and 836)

The Australian Carer Visa program is designed for individuals who wish to move to Australia to provide care for a person with a disability, a long-term medical condition or who requires assistance due to age. There are two types of Carer Visa: Subclass 116 and Subclass 836

What are the differences between Carer Visa - Subclass 116 and Subclass 836?

The main difference between the two Carer Visas is where the applicants can be when the visa is lodged and when the visa comes to a decision. This requirement is also applicable to secondary applicants.

  • Carer Visa (Subclass 116) requires the primary applicant to be outside of Australia. This also applies to secondary applicants who are applying for visas.

  • Carer Visa (Subclass 836) requires the primary applicant to be inside of Australia. This also applies to secondary applicants who are applying for visas.

What are Common Requirements for Carer Visa (Subclass 116 & 836)?

Both the Carer Visa (SC 116 and 836) are permanent visas that allow individuals to live in Australia indefinitely. This visa is suited for those who wish to provide care for a relative who cannot receive adequate support from other family members or community services.

What are the Eligibilities for Subclass 116 & 836 Carer Visa?

  • The applicant must genuinely be willing and able to care for their relative (sponsor).

  • The applicant and any secondary member of family units (MoFU) must meet health and character requirements

What is required from the Sponsor for a Carer Visa (Subclass 116 & 836)?

  • The relative, their spouse, or de facto partner must be over 18 years old and an Australian Citizen, permanent resident (PR), or eligible New Zealand citizen.

  • Sponsorship is required from the relative who needs care or their spouse or de facto partner.

  • The sponsor must be the relative of the applicant who needs care (for themselves) or the spouse or de facto partner who is living in the same house with the relative in Australia.

Is there a Criteria of the Sponsor’s Medical Condition?

  • The medical condition must be classified as long-term or permanent.

  • The care or assistance required must be ongoing for a duration of at least 2 years.

  • Medical assessments must be conducted through Bupa Medical Visa Services
