I'm a British Citizen – What Australian Visa Am I Eligible to Apply For?
As a British citizen considering a move to Australia, you have several visa options to explore based on your circumstances and goals. We have compiled a list of visas that may be good options for you to start your migration journey.
What Australian Visa Am I Eligible For As a British Citizen?
There are several visa pathways for you to choose from, depending on your visa objective:
If you wish to gain some work experience in Australia temporarily:
British citizens are eligible to apply for the Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417). This visa allows British citizens between 18 and 35 years old to apply to live and work in Australia while travelling. This visa allows you to stay for up to a further 2 years without needing to meet specific work requirements, such as regional work.
If you wish to migrate to Australia permanently:
General Skilled Migration (GSM) may be a possible option for you to explore. The GSM program includes visas such as the Skilled Independent (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190), and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491). You will need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and meet the relevant criteria based on your occupation.
If you have an employer, a Skill in Demand (SID) visa (Subclass 482), which is an employer-sponsored visa, can also be a pathway to permanent residency (PR). After holding this visa for 2 years, you may be eligible for the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) (Subclass 186) - Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream.
If you wish to study in Australia:
Apply for a Student visa (Subclass 500), which allows you to study full time in Australia. This visa also leads to pathways, such as the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485), which then opens up to multiple other visa options.
If you wish to reunite with your family:
British citizens with an Australian citizen, or PR spouse or partner, or with Australian children, may apply for:
