Invitation-Only National Innovation Visa (SC 858): Attracting World Leaders in Technology, Clean Energy, and More

Since 7 December 2024 onwards, the National Innovation Visa (NIV) (Subclass 858) is an invitation-only permanent visa program that replaces the Global Talent visa. This visa is designed for exceptionally talented migrants with world-leading skills in areas such as: 

  • Advanced robotics 

  • Quantum computing 

  • Clean energy 

 

How Does the National Innovation Visa (NIV) (SC 858) Application Process? 

  1. Expression of Interest (EOI) 

    Exceptionally talented individuals must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA).

  2. Invitation to Apply

    The Department will invite a selected number of individuals who submitted an EOI to apply for the NIV (Subclass 858).

 

What is the Priority Order for National Innovation Visa (NIV) Invitations? 

The Department of Home Affairs will process invitations and applications according to the following priority order

  • Recipients of Internationally Prestigious Awards

    • Nobel Prize laureates 

    • Fields Medal recipients 

    • Booker Prize winners 

    • Olympic gold medalists 

  • Endorsed Individuals

    • Exceptionally talented people endorsed by relevant Australian state, territory, or federal government agencies.

  • Skills in Critical Industries

    • Individuals with exceptional skills in critical technologies, renewables, low-emission technologies, and health industries.

  • Other Key Sectors

    • Exceptionally talented individuals in agri-food and ag-tech, resources, defence capabilities and space, education, financial services and fintech, and infrastructure and transport. 

 

What are the Requirements for the NIV (SC 858) Application? 

  • Age Limit: There is no age limit for applicants. 

  • English Language Requirements: Requirements are flexible, accommodating various proficiency levels. 

  • Location of Applicants: EOIs can be submitted from overseas or by individuals already in Australia on a temporary visa. 

 

How Long Are The NIV (Subclass 858) EOIs Valid For?

EOIs for the NIV are valid for 2 years. During this period, the Department of Home Affairs may invite applicants to apply for a visa.
