Is Taking an English Test Required to Apply for Partner Visa?
Imagine this: you’ve found your partner for life and are ready to start your life together in Australia. But then, a new policy change catches your attention for partner visa applications that may soon require evidence of their English proficiency. Is this a stumbling block in your partner visa?
What is the English Test Policy for Partner Visas?
The Australian government has introduced a policy that includes basic English proficiency as part of the partner visa application process. Below is an explanation of the policy:
Who needs to take the English Test?
Individuals may need to demonstrate their English proficiency:
The visa applicant, and
The sponsor who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident (PR) or eligible New Zealand citizen
How to Meet the English Requirement for a Partner Visa?
Sit and achieve functional English through one of the accredited English tests, IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or CAE.
Hold a passport from an exempt country (e.g. the UK, the USA, Canada, New Zealand or Ireland).
What is Functional English?
For you to achieve Functional English, you will have to obtain an overall:
IELTS band score of at least 4.5.
PTE band score of at least 30.
TOEFL band score of at least 32.
CAE band score of at least 147.
Why is the Policy Being Introduced?
The policy aims to ensure couples can integrate seamlessly into Australian society, including in work and community life.
When will this policy be in effect?
Although this proposed policy was announced in late 2020, it has yet to go into effect. However, there remains a window of opportunity to apply for a partner visa under the current requirements without proving your English proficiency.
