How do I Overcome Health Requirements if I Have a Child with Health Issues?

It can be overwhelming navigating health requirements for Australian visas, especially if you have a child with a permanent condition that may impact the application as typically it can be a one fail all fail decision

Understanding Health Requirement (PIC 4005 and PIC 4007)

All visa applications require applicants to meet the Public Interest Criteria (PIC) 4005 or 4007 health requirements. Both PICs require the applicants to be free from tuberculosis and from any diseases or condition that may be a threat or danger to the Australian public health. Additionally, applicants are required to be free from diseases or conditions that would likely require health care services that incur a significant amount of AUD 86,000 (current threshold) or prejudice access for Australians.

If Your Child Has a Permanent Condition, What Can You Do?

If your child has a permanent or ongoing condition, such as being diagnosed with an autistic spectrum or diabetes. It is best to gather professional advice from an Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law on your next best steps. At the same time, it can be beneficial for your visa application to gather your child’s health evidence, such as:

  • Medical history

  • Medical diagnosis

  • Estimated costs over the next 10 years

  • Daily care and requirements

  • Any support needed for educational or developmental activities

How Will the Department of Home Affairs assess My Child’s Health?

When assessing the health requirements, the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) focuses on the projected costs of healthcare services required on a hypothetical person in Australia. For children with a permanent condition such as autism, it is important to note if the condition is effectively managed and there is no history of significant hospitalisations or complications, you may be able to build stronger evidence.

For instance, if the estimated costs for managing your child’s condition over the next 10 years or the duration of the temporary visa validity are below AUD 86,000, your visa application may successfully meet the health criteria.
