All You Need To Know About Working Holiday Visas (Subclass 417 & 462)

What is a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) (Subclass 417 & 462)?

The Working Holiday Visa (WHV) (Subclass 417 & 462) is a temporary visa that allows young adults from participating countries from 18 to 30 years old (or 35 years old for some countries) to experience Australia while having the opportunity to work.

What are the main differences between Subclass 417 and Subclass 462?

The general eligibility and requirements for both visas are similar. The one main difference is the eligibility of passport holders from the participating countries.

Visa applicants from the eligible country listed are eligible to apply for subclass 417:

  • Republic of Cyprus

  • Denmark

Visa applicants who hold a valid passport from one of these countries are eligible to apply for subclass 462. China, India, and Vietnam passport holders can apply for their first WHV (Subclass 462) by participating in a visa pre-application process (ballot) and being selected randomly.

What is the Eligibility for Working Holiday Visas (SC 417 & 462)?

  • Be a passport holder of one of the countries listed above.

  • Must be of this age bracket of 18 - 30 (or 35 for some countries). If you apply for the visa while you are 30 (or 35), your visa will still be granted when you turn 31 (or 36) if you meet all other visa requirements.

  • Must not be accompanied by minor dependents.

What are the Benefits of the WHV (Subclass 417 & 462)?

  • Once your visa application is granted, you will be granted a 12-month stay. During this period, you can travel in and out of Australia.

  • You have unlimited work rights. If specified regional work is completed for a required amount of time, the visa holder may be eligible for a second or even third Work and Holiday (subclass 417 or 462) visa to extend their stay.

Are there any Work Limitations?

Applicants have the ability to work in Australia with the same workplace rights and entitlements. You may have a visa condition 8547, in which a maximum of 6 months is spent with a single employer. However, some visa applicants may be exempted from the condition 8547.

How much does a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) cost?

As of to date, both WHV (Subclass 417 and 462) visas cost AUD 650

Is there a pathway to PR?

There is a possibility for a pathway to PR. There are a number of visa options that may work (if you meet the visa eligibility and criteria) as a stepping stone to reaching your objective for permanent residency (PR). Speak to an immigration lawyer to figure out which visa is suitable.
