Biometrics for Australian Visa Application Guide
Biometric data collection is a component of the application process for certain visa subclasses in Australia. This process is only required for some applicants from designated countries.
What are Biometrics?
Biometrics is a unique physical characteristic that is used to verify an individual’s identity.
Who Needs to Provide Biometrics?
Visa applicants are required to submit biometric data if they meet either the following conditions:
They are applying for a visa that is part of the biometrics program.
They are located in a country that participates in the biometrics program.
Upon lodging a visa application, the Department issues a request letter titled “Requirement to provide personal identifiers (biometrics) for the purposes of section 40 of the Migration Act 1958.” The notice will include specific instructions on how to complete the biometric collection process and the applicant’s Visa Lodgement Number (VLN).
Applicants typically have 14 calendar days to complete this process. If they cannot meet the deadline, they may provide reasons for the delay. Failure to submit biometrics on time can result in a visa refusal.
What is the Biometrics Collection Process?
The biometric data collected includes:
A digital photograph of the applicant’s face
Fingerprint scans of all 10 fingers
Are there any Special Considerations for Biometrics?
Applicants under 16 years old or individuals who do not fully understand biometric collection must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Applicants under the age of 5 (if outside Australia) and under 10 (if in Australia) are only required to provide a photograph. Fingerprint scans are not needed.
Applicants with facial or fingerprint injuries should postpone their appointment until they have healed.
While religious head coverings or glasses may need to be removed for the photograph, arrangements can be made for a private collection.
Where to Provide Biometrics?
Biometrics must be collected at an Australian Biometric Collection Centre (ABCC). The procedure varies depending on whether the applicant is located inside or outside Australia.
Which Visas Require Biometrics?
