Why Many Graduates Fail to Secure a Subclass 485 Visa - Common Mistakes to Avoid

The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) allows recently graduated international students from an Australian institution to live, study, and work in Australia temporarily. While this is a natural transition for Student Visa (Subclass 500) holders, as it provides a valuable opportunity to gain professional experience, many applicants face challenges that lead to their visa applications being refused.

What are the Common Refusal Reasons for a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)?

  • One common reason for many applicants who receive a visa refusal is the time required to provide their English proficiency test results in the visa application. The visa decision criteria require applicants to provide their English test results at the time of submitting the visa application. Hence, if the English test results are provided after submitting the Subclass 485 visa application,

  • Another common reason for a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) refusal is that the applicant lodged the wrong stream, which led to the unable to meet the eligibility requirements of the stream. The Subclass 485 visa comes in 3 streams: the Post-Vocational Education Work stream, the Post-Higher Education Work stream and the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream. It is highly suggested that the applicant understand each stream to meet the visa requirements.

  • Additionally, the Subclass 485 visa must be applied for within 6 months of graduation. Graduates who delay their applications may find themselves ineligible. Be mindful of timelines and ensure that they submit their application promptly after meeting the qualifications.

What happens if I receive a Subclass 485 refusal?

If you receive a Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) visa refusal, before taking any action, seek professional advice and assistance from an immigration lawyer. There may be the option to appeal the visa refusal to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART).
